This is a very broad topic. I would suggest narrowing down your time period. Also, I'm not sure if you're going to be able to successfully compare South Africa and China. Depending on the time period, you would either want find another communist state to compare to China or another state that was ostracized by the global community.
Good question... the only suggestion I have would be to narrow South Africa down a country or two.
