  2. ‘Wouldn’t it be better if ... ’ there was a better suggestion box? Enter Betterific. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/innovations/post/wouldnt-it-be-better-if---there-was-a-better-suggestion-box-enter-betterific/2013/01/09/350557d4-59cf-11e2-88d0-c4cf65c3ad15_blog.html
Micha Weinblatt, Brad Cater and Jonathan Schilit know that customers want to have their say to make companies better. The three young men created a company called Betterific. The new social networking site allows you to answer the question to companies "Wouldn't it be better if..." The site allows you to sync with your Twitter or Facebook to tell your friends what you think of these companies. This relates to "The World Is Flat" because of uploading. Friedman discusses how uploading allows people to contribute information to the world like their opinions on amazon, and this flattens the world. Now with betterific they can voice their opinions on any technologic device, restaurant, or even clothing stores. The idea of uploading is crucial to todays society to help better the small and large companies contributing to todays economy.

  3. Campaigns Use Social Media to Lure Younger Voters
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/08/technology/campaigns-use-social-media-to-lure-younger-voters.html

Friedman’s fourth flattener is uploading, which is the process of creating and contributing information to the network from your computer. It’s popularity has now added a new dimension to political campaigns as reported in this article. In the 2012 election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, uploading song playlists, photos, and even recipes of the candidates to sites such as Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter became part of the campaign. Each side wanted to take advantage of the popularity of the social Web to attract voters, especially the younger ones who rely on the Web for their news. But the article also noted, the opposing campaign can also use blogs or posts to refute claims or even poke fun at the opposition. According to the article, the postings attracted responses, especially for the Obama campaign, with close to 70,000 responses on Tumblr. As Friedman expressed, the world of politics will be flattened by uploading as individual users/voters are able to participate in political campaigns and the barriers between the candidates and the voters are broken down.

  4. Calls for Press Freedom in China's South http://rendezvous.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/07/calls-for-press-freedom-in-chinas-south/

Friedman writes that the fourth flattener, uploading, lets individuals become producers of information and changes the traditional way information flows. In this article, the Chinese people have used their ability to blog, connect with each other and share ideas to come together to protest against their local newspaper being censored by the Chinese government. Fed-up with the censorship, an online petition was drafted and signed by hundreds of Chinese Interenet users. Also, some of China's most famous actresses even wrote messages of support on their blogs. The power to upload information and maintain blogs have given the Chinese the ability to come together as a group to fight for a common cause. Without the ability to upload and share information, it would be very hard to for the Chinese to fight against the government for the freedom of the press.

  5. Craig Slee Jailed for Posting Beheaded Pictures on Facebook
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-21090488

Friedman suggests in his fourth flattener that people are now capable of uploading their personal content onto the Internet. Different forms of personal content include photos, videos, etc. People upload to the Internet daily. For example, one may upload an entire album of pictures to Facebook or a video onto YouTube. However, there are a few select people that take uploading to an extreme. For example, this article mentions how Craig Slee uploaded videos online to Facebook that showed the beheadings of people in al-Qaeda. Also, he posted links to other websites that were encouraging of terrorism. The article states that the videos that Slee uploaded tried to persuade people to agree with the terrorism cause. This article relates to the flattener because it proves how anything is able to be uploaded onto the Internet. Slee has been sentenced to five years in jail as a result of what he had uploaded. The uploaded content may encourage others to take part in terrorism. Uploading content onto the Internet can be done with malicious and deceitful intent to carry out personal agendas, which contributes to the flattening Earth. It is a contribution because now people are aware of what this man was thinking about and guides viewers to other websites that may persuade them to join the terrorist movement.

  6. Blogging Increases Web Traffic - The Importance of a Blog
    http://asjpartners.com/staffing-inboundmarketing/blogging-increases-web-traffic-the-importance-of-a-blog/

Blogging has become popular among people of all ages. Friedman describes blogging as people offering new and opinions to social networks and the Internet. This article proves that blogging has become an important way for individuals to contribute to society. In this article there is a graph that show the increase of traffic flow due to blogs. The graph increases depending on the number of visits blogs get and the amount of interaction. Within six months, the traffic flow almost doubled and the amount of blogs rapidly increased. This proves the Friedman was correct that blogging is a major form of uploading. Within the fourth flattener, Friedman writes that a new blog is created every seven seconds. Friedman also includes a quote that this article relates too. THe quote states, " The next generation is growing up online, rather than adapting to it in their mid-adult years," Mican Sifry. This quote explains how uploading ing general is taking over the worlds of the younger population.

  7. Facebook apologizes for closing Arab-Israeli journalist’s page
    http://www.jta.org/news/article/2013/01/20/3117371/facebook-apologizes-for-closing-arab-israeli-journalists-page

Facebook closed an Israeli-Arab journalist's page last week for twenty-four hours. Facebook also removed some of his posts that contained ideas of corruption in the Palestinian Authority. The website has been removing posts that may be irritating to some dictatorships. In flattener four, Friedman mentions that people can now add information to the internet for all users to see. This idea has been exhibited often lately in middle-eastern countries. Some of the countries' governments have been corrupt, and their citizens have expressed it through the internet and websites such as Facebook. This journalist uploaded information for everyone to see. This is a form of communication which has and continues to flatten the world.

  8. A Year After the Closing of Megaupload, a File-Sharing Tycoon Opens a New Site
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/21/technology/digital-daredevil-behind-megaupload-has-a-new-venture.html?ref=technology&_r=0

The 4th flatterer in the world is flat is uploading. Uploading is when people enter information or even software online where other people can download it. Over a year ago there was a giant uploading site named megaupload, however due to people uploading and downloading copyright material it was taken down. Exactly one year after the site was taken down creator Mr. Dotcom created a new site with the same purpose however it allows people to encrypt their data before uploading. The release of this new website allows the world to flatten by allowing people to share data and information where it is accessible to anyone else.

  9. A Revamped Myspace Site Faces a Problem With Rights
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/21/business/media/myspace-is-accused-of-using-music-without-permission.html?ref=technology

This article talks about the problem of uploading music onto a new form of Myspace. Uploading is the flattener and the author talked about it being a good thing to be able to upload something on the internet and have someone else download it. An easy way to share a file with someone. This strikes a problem because some music and other things that are uploaded are being uploaded by people that don't own the thing. Music artist are not pleased when people upload their music for other people to just download for free. This article is a perfect example. Although the flattener is good for saying that people come closer together because of how easy it is to share something but it does strike problems sometimes.

  11. Popular YouTube Videos Are Cash Cows For Uploaders

    http://www.npr.org/2011/11/14/142295632/the-last-word-in-business

The fourth flattener, in accordance to Friedman, is identified as uploading. Uploading allows individuals to post their personal data files to the internet. The uploads can take the form of photos, videos, music files, documents, etc. Uploading has become very popular all around the world and one of the most notorious websites that encourage uploading is Youtube. On Youtube, videos are uploading and broadcasted around the world. This article enhances a specific story of a man who made a profit off of an uploaded video onto Youtube. The upload became known as "Charlie Bit My Finger" and was a huge hit for viewers all over the globe. Due to Youtube's deals with some of its uploaders, the dad who posted the video received over $150,000. This is an example of the fourth flattener because it shows how one upload was accessed by millions of people, which in turn, ended up granting the uploader money.

  12. Instagram users should wise up
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/20/opinion/rushkoff-instagram-users/index.html?iref=allsearch

This news story is about how Instagram is using personal pictures of different people and selling them to various companies for a profit. The reason they do this is because Instagram was bought by Facebook for one billion dollars, and Instagram was a free app before. Facebook didn't want to make people have to buy it because then they would lose an incredible amount of customers. Therefore, the only possible solution was to sell the photos to companies for advertising. For example, if someone posted a picture of themselves riding a roller coaster at Dorney park, they may sell the photo to Dorney park for a large amount of money without the user knowing. This relates to uploading because the users of Instagram have to upload the pictures before they can be sold.
